Bender plans to transfer from WVU

Published

Today, the West Virginia men’s basketball team announced that sophomore big man Maciej Bender has asked for his release and will be transferring out of the program. “We have enjoyed Magic and his contributions to Mountaineer basketball. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.” said head coach, Bob Huggins.

This move comes to no surprise as the Mountaineers were over the scholarship limit for the 2018-19 season and are still looking to potentially add one more signee to the 2018 recruiting class. Bender played in 58 games making one start for the Mountaineers over his two years in the program while averaging 7.9 minutes per game, 1.3 points per game and 1.7 rebounds per game.

The Mountaineers are now back down to the maximum of 13 scholarship players with the transfer of Bender. If the coaching staff decides to add one more signee, the team will be back to one over the limit. Highly recruited forward, Emmitt Matthews of Washington seems to be the guy to focus in on here as he just received a visit last week from Bob Huggins and assistant coach Erik Martin.
