The college basketball offseason is taking a small break from the news as the draft combine continues this week in Chicago. Let’s take a look at what’s happening around the Big 12 over the past day.

Houston HC Kelvin Sampson Interviewed by Bucks

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Wednesday night that Houston’s head coach Kelvin Sampson has interviewed for the Milwaukee Bucks job. The Bucks recently fired Mike Budenholzer, who coached Milwaukee to their first NBA championship in 50 years.

Sampson has resurged his career at Houston, helping the Cougars get back into national relevance since the Phi Slama Jama era with Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and others. Sampson has coached Houston to five NCAA Tournament appearances with multiple second weekend trips, capped off by a Final Four appearance in 2021. Sampson has brought a toughness back to Houston that’s supported by tall guards and small bigs. Houston is fast, athletic and will beat you to every hustle play.

Sampson is currently getting Houston prepared for their Big 12 season debut. The Cougars are once again a potential top 10 team in America. Sampson has brought in LJ Cryer (G – Baylor) and Damian Dunn (G – Temple) from the transfer portal. Time will tell if Sampson stays with the Cougars or takes the jump to the NBA.

Kansas, WVU, Others Still Looking at Portal Prospects

As the transfer portal entry window closed last Thursday, Big 12 schools are still looking to add from the available pool in the portal. West Virginia reached out to a pair of combos guards on Wednesday in Zyon Pullin (UC Riverside) and D’Marco Dunn (UNC). Kansas still has two scholarship spots remaining too, including their high school class that’s coming in. The Jayhawks added Santa Clara transfer Parker Braun, brother of former guard Christian Braun.

North Carolina transfer Caleb Love decommitted from Michigan on Wednesday night after having trouble with his transcript and Michigan’s high academic standards. Expect a couple Big 12 schools to contact Love.
