MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVU interim HC Josh Eilert and forward Quinn Slazinski provided an update on Akok Akok, who collapsed in the second half of the George Mason exhibition. Akok was on the floor for about 13 minutes with medical staff looking at him before stretchering him off the floor.

Akok was then taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital for further observation.

“Good news is that he’s stable, responsive. He wanted to make sure he congratulated his teammates and he’s in a good place right now,” Eilert said. “They’re probably going to be holding him overnight doing a lot of testing. Never thought I’d have to deal with a situation like that. It’s heartbreaking but I’m glad he’s still with us.”

Slazinski added that Akok has been texting the team following the game, giving them updates. Akok is moving around and further testing is being worked on.

“All is well. He’s admitted overnight. We’re super proud of him sticking with us, he’s texting us congratulations, good job on the win. Everything should be good, just a real freak accident. We’re just happy everyone is okay,” Slazinski said.

Akok is a transfer by way of Georgetown and is in his first year with West Virginia. Akok is also playing in his final year of eligibility as a fifth-year senior.

WV Sports Now will continue to provide updates on Akok’s status.
