Former Mountaineer Helped Nigeria Achieve Historic Win at Olympics

A former Mountaineer helped her country achieve an historic upset win in the Olympics so far.

Blessing Ejiofor and Nigeria shocked Australia 73-62 early Monday morning. The win was Nigeria’s first victory on the Olympic stage in 20 years. in the country’s first

Ejiofor scored two points on one basket in seven minutes played off the bench. She also recorded a steal in the game.

After the game, the WVU women’s basketball program honored Eliofor’s contributions to the historic moment with a post on social media.

“A part of history Blessing helps Nigeria to a 75-62 win over Australia, marking the teams first win at the Olympics in years!,” posted the WVU women’s basketball account on X (formerly Twitter). 

Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark delivered a message to Big 12 fans back home while in Paris to support the conference’s athletes of the past (like Ejiofor) and present.

“Greetings from Paris, Big 12 fans,” Yormark said. “So thrilled to be here. It’s just a wonderful moment. Over 151 of our student-athletes, both former and current, are here in Paris. They represent over 45 different countries. I’ll be seeing quite a few of the events over the next couple of days, and I just wanted to say hello and wish all of our athletes a great experience here in Paris.”
