Dana Holgorsen has chosen to hire one of his former players at West Virginia to fill a vacancy on his coaching staff.

Holgorsen has announced that former Mountaineer wide receiver Daikiel Shorts will join him at Houston as the teams new wide receivers coach. Shorts will be replacing Tyron Carrier, who was West Virginia’s wide receivers coach from 2016-18 before following Holgorsen to Houston in 2019.

Last week, Holgorsen issued a statement announcing that Carrier wouldn’t be returning to the Cougars program.

“We are grateful for Tyron’s commitment to our program as an assistant coach and as well as a student-athlete at the University of Houston. After meeting today with Tyron, we determined it was in the best interest of both sides to part ways at this time. We wish him and his family the best going forward.”

Shorts was a member of West Virginia’s program from 2013 till 2016, when he caught 176 passes for 2,246 yards (12.8 average) and 14 touchdowns. Following his playing days, Shorts was a Mountaineer assistant in 2018 and most recently serving as Houston director of player development.
