After Neal Brown repeated what he said all spring, Garrett Greene was tasked with assessing his own game at Big 12 Media Days.

And in typical Greene fashion, he was honest and echoed much of what his coach said. But in this case, Greene also went a bit further.

When asked what he needs to work on the most, Greene quickly pinpointed short and intermediate throws as his biggest weakness.

โ€œThe short and intermediate throws, my misses on those, it wasnโ€™t an arm thing. It was my feet,โ€ responded Greene.

โ€œSo, the last two-or- three months, Iโ€™ve really been honing in on my feet and the small mechanics that lead to big jumps,” Greene said.

He then revealed his personal goal for himself from a passing perspective, which goes a step beyond what the coaching staff expects from him this fall. “I want to be up above 65 percent in completion percentage. Thatโ€™s where I would love to be.”

To no surprise, Brown was asked several questions at Big 12 Media Days that focused on Greene. Brown has made no secret about the fact the Mountaineers will only go as far as Greene can take them.

When asked about his QB1 and leader, Brown reiterated what heโ€™s said in the past about Greene.

โ€œHeโ€™s an elite runner. Heโ€™s extremely fast. And he probably throws the deep ball better than anyone Iโ€™ve coached.โ€ Brown then brought up how Greene needs to be more accurate and take this completion percentage from 52.9 to around 60, which was discussed throughout the spring.

Neal Brown Offers Praise, Honest Evaluation of WVU QB Garrett Greene

Brown also mentioned Greene failing to appear in preseason rankings as part of why his team he feels slighted this offseason. But Brown is making sure West Virginia embraces the underdog role again.

โ€œWeโ€™re coming off 9-4 and I look at some of the preseason Top 25s and weโ€™re not in it.โ€ said Brown on Wednesday at Big 12 Media Days. โ€œWeโ€™re picked seventh in the league. Weโ€™re not in some of these preseason Top 25s. Garrett Greene is not getting talked about as much as some others. His production speaks for itself. Wyatt Milum is as good as any left tackle in the country. We could go on and on. I think our players are being underrated as well.โ€

WVU HC Neal Brown Embracing Underdog Role, Feels Slighted by Polls

Brown now looks to continue his teamโ€™s climb as West Virginia hopes to move from nine wins to double digits. If that happens, he feels securing the programโ€™s first Big 12 title and an appearance in the College Football Playoff will be within reach.

Only time will tell if WVU achieves those lofty goals, but retaining most of the key contributors from 2023 and adding a few other notable pierces through the transfer portal should help the Mountaineers have another successful season.
