Grant Hussey Vents Frustration for How His Career Ended: “Slap in the Face”

WVU Baseball first baseman Grant Hussey expressed frustration with the way his season — and Mountaineers career — came to an end in the hours following West Virginia’s early morning loss to LSU in the NCAA Tournament Super Regional round.
Hussey was a surprise omission from the starting lineup during the Mountaineers’ playoff run, with head coach Steve Sabins turning to Ben Lumsden at first base instead. A defensive substitution in the top of the ninth inning in West Virginia’s season ending loss, Hussey didn’t even get to take an at-bat to end his college career… a surprising omission for the program leader in home runs. With the game all but out of reach at 12-5, one last plate appearance wouldn’t have come at the cost of strategy.
A Mountaineers’ fan pointed that out on X (formerly Twitter), and Hussey responded soon thereafter.
“Slap in the face,” Hussey said. “I don’t even have words for it.”
The big first baseman, normally not a big social media user, made sure to congratulate Lumsden, his de facto replacement, in another tweet.
Lums did great

Grant Hussey’s father, Steve Hussey, also chimed in, saying “Glad he’s standing up for himself. Raised him not [to] take anything laying down.”
Hussey didn’t direct his ire at anyone specifically, but his lack of playing time adds a puzzling angle to the end of the best season in WVU Baseball program history… and Hussey’s standout career. The Mountaineers went 44-16 in 2025, their best record ever, reaching the Super Regional for the second year in a row.
