How Does Top Figure in NFL Scouting Community View Garrett Greene?

With the 2024 season fast approaching, it’s time for Garrett Greene to prove his doubters wrong and confirm why his supporters believe in him. The 2024 season also marks Greene’s last chance to show NFL scouts why he has the talent to be an NFL caliber quarterback.

And while the commentary surrounding Greene has been all over the place this offseason, Greene did receive a vote of confidence from someone with influence in the NFL scouting community.

Eric Galko, the Director of Football Operations and Player Personnel for the Shrine Bowl, detailed his thoughts about Greene as a pro prospect ahead of the 2024 season.

“In his first season as a full-time starter, Garrett Greene proved to be a dynamic impact player for the Mountaineer offense, leading WVU to a 9-win season for the first time since 2016. Greene emerged as one of the best dual threat QBs in the country, and his athleticism has even prompted scouts to be curious about his ability as a receiver as well as a quarterback,” said Galko in a long post on social media on Monday.

He continued. “But Greene has shown plenty as a QB so far to be one of college football’s most impressive passers and an NFL prospect at quarterback. Greene played with consistent precision, leading the NCAA in BTT% (Big Time Throw) at a 10.2% clip (per PFF College), and his ability to be aggressive downfield, especially on the move, makes him so And of course, he offers high-end quarterback mobility: He totaled 772 yards and 13 rushing TDs, including FOUR 100-yard rushing games, and was only sacked 4 times in 350 dropbacks in 2023. He plays efficiently in and out of the pocket and has big play ability with his legs too. Heading into his second season as the starter, Greene’s ability to protect the ball AND be a dynamic playmaker in 2024 could make him one of the most unique playmakers in the country. And West Virginia is one of the sleeper teams in the country: don’t be surprised if Neal Brown has this team very much in the Big 12 title hunt again, and maybe beyond, all year long.”

Beyond the opinions of scouts and analysts, Greene earned a major preseason honor being named one of 50 “players to watch” for the 2024 Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, the nation’s fourth-oldest individual college football award.

Greene made a watch list that includes 41 offensive players (20 quarterbacks, 11 running backs, five receivers/tight ends and two offensive lineman) along with nine from the defensive side of the ball. He’s also on the watch list for the Maxwell Award and has been nominated for the Wuerffel Trophy.

And in typical Greene fashion, he has been honest when offering his own evaluation of his game and what he needs to work on make the NFL dream a reality.

Garrett Greene Pinpoints Biggest Weakness, Provides Lofty Personal Goal

Greene quickly pinpointed short and intermediate throws as his biggest weakness.

“The short and intermediate throws, my misses on those, it wasn’t an arm thing. It was my feet,” explained Greene.

“So, the last two-or- three months, I’ve really been honing in on my feet and the small mechanics that lead to big jumps,” Greene said.

He then revealed his personal goal for himself from a passing perspective, which goes a step beyond what the coaching staff expects from him this fall. “I want to be up above 65 percent in completion percentage. That’s where I would love to be.”
