West Virginia has been without Jesse Edwards for nearly a month after the big man fractured his right wrist against UMass on Dec. 16. WVU interim HC Josh Eilert provided another update on his radio show on Thursday night with Tony Caridi.

“He’s got one more week with a brace. Even with a brace, he’s had no mobility with it. He’s had no rehab with it so it hasn’t moved in four weeks. Once that brace comes off then the rehab starts,” Eilert said.

Eilert adds that it’s unrealistic to see Edwards against Kansas next Saturday, Jan. 20, if the brace is removed a week from the show’s recording on Thursday. For an exact timetable, Eilert is not sure when Edwards could return to the floor.

“We’ve got to do right by Jesse. We don’t want to force the issue,” he said.

Edwards is currently in his fifth season of college basketball, his first and only with West Virginia. Edwards is averaging 14.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks through the first 10 games of the season. The 6-foot-11 Syracuse transfer had successful surgery on Dec. 20 and his original timetable was approximately four weeks.

For now, WVU will continue to throw out Akok Akok and Pat Suemnick at the five spot until Edwards returns from injury.

West Virginia will host No. 25 Texas on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers will look to snap a three-game losing streak.

WV Sports Now will continue to provide updates on Jesse Edwards and his injury.
