Meet the WVU Basketball Team: Jackson Fields, Scoring Jack of All Trades
Knowing size matters in the Big 12, WVU’s Ross Hodge recruited Jackson Fields from Troy. Fields brings size – he’s listed as 6-foot-8 and 210 pounds – and also scoring versatility to the Mountaineers.
Fields started 33 of 34 games played last season, averaging 7.9 points per game, the most out of his three seasons at Troy. He also had his best seasons in rebounds per game at 4.8.
Standing at 6-foot-8 and 210 pounds, Troy often played Fields in the low post. Sixty-six percent of his field goal attempts came from inside the three-point line last season.
Fields scored down low in multiple ways, sometimes playing as a true five. He is an efficient post scorer, finding various ways to convert at the rim.

Troy also utilized Fields on the perimeter and found him cutting to the rim. His frame and driving ability allowed him to be a successful scorer on pick-and-roll designs.
Fields finds success from driving and cutting in part because he can knock down shots from three-point range. He shot 33.3% from beyond the arc last season and has a career percentage of 32.4.

Last season, Fields did not make a three-point shot until Jan. 2 against Appalachian State, the second game of Sun Belt Conference play for the Trojans. He started shooting at a higher volume later in the season, with his first game of more than two three-pointer attempts coming against Arkansas State University on Feb. 15.
Fields made five three-pointers on seven attempts in the matchup versus Arkansas State. He made five more against James Madison in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Semifinal.
On top of helping Troy win the Sun Belt Conference Championship with 10 points, he added seven points and seven rebounds against the Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Fields’ experience as a champion and a postseason contributor made him an attractive recruit for Hodge.
“Jackson brings with him NCAA Tournament and championship experience,” Hodge said in a release on April 15. “He is a versatile player who happens to be an incredible person. He also continues to improve which speaks to his character and work ethic.”
