The West Virginia Mountaineers upset the two-seeded and No. 7 ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders 79-74 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament. The Mountaineers built up a big lead twice to only let it slip away both times, but WVU was not going to be denied to play another night.

Texas Tech jumped out to a 4-0 after a Davide Morretti jumper and a steal that lead to Jarrett Culver dunking on the other end.

Emmitt Mathews Jr started an 11-3 run with a three from the corner and the Mountaineers took advantage with their size driving the lane and feeding the post.

The Red Raiders was held without a field goal for 10 minutes while eight different Mountaineers scored during a 17-2 run and was leading 28-11 with 9:28 left in the first half.

West Virginia let their lead slip away, expedited by six turnovers, and Texas Tech got within four 33-29 with just under two minutes left till half. However, Mathews scored five straight including a dunk and the foul, completing the three-point play to end the half with 15 points.

Emmitt Mathews Jr and the Mountaineers continued their reign of terror over the Red Raiders in the second half.

West Virginia answered on the offensive end answering any little run Texas Tech tried to put together.

Mathews drilled a three from the corner and had 26 points after Jordan McCabe came up with the loose ball with 8:38 left to play.

Texas Tech started to chip away at the WVU and gained control of the game after a Davide Morretti three cut it to four with 4:17 left in the game.

On the ensuing possession, Jordan McCabe drilled a deep three from straight away to end a five-minute scoring drought to push the lead back up to seven.

The Red Raiders answered with an 8-0 run to take their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

West Virginia Bob Huggins would call a timeout and get the ball down to Derek Culver who was fouled and made both free throws to re-take the lead.

The Mountaineers never got rattled and Jermaine Haley completed a three-point play after Lamont West drive the lane and dished it to Haley for the lay-in and the foul putting the Mountaineers up four.

Texas Techs Jarrett Culver drove the lane for the basket and the foul for a three-point play to cut it back to one with 22 seconds left in the game.

The Red Raiders were forced to foul Jordan McCabe and he made both free throws. With Texas Tech down three, and a long three-point attempt for Culver was no good as Emmitt Mathews made two more free throws to give him a career high 28-points on the nigh,t as the Mountaineers upset Texas Tech 79-74.

West Virginia will play at approximately 9:00 pm est as they await the winner of Kansas and Texas.
