Mountaineers Pull Away Late To Beat Texas Tech

The West Virginia women’s basketball team (18-7, 6-7) used strong second half shooting to snap its three game losing streak in a 74-60 win over Texas Tech (7-17, 1-12) on Saturday afternoon in Lubbock.

Led by 19 points from Katrina Pardee and 18 points each from Naomi Davenport and Teana Muldrow, the Mountaineers shot 4-of-7 from three in the second half en route to the victory. The WVU defense clamped down in the second half, allowing the Lady Raiders to make only one three pointer, after going 5-of-7 in the first half. Texas Tech also committed 20 turnovers.

A hot-shooting second quarter, in which Texas Tech out-scored WVU 19-12, brought the Lady Raiders within two at halftime. Brittany Brewer led Texas Tech with 13 points, while Zuri Sanders and Lyndsey Whilby scored 12 and 11, respectively.

WVU earned a 36-31 edge on the glass, including 18 offensive rebounds which led to 17 second-chance points. The Mountaineers also scored 18 points off of turnovers.

In the second quarter, Muldrow passed Mountaineer great Olayinka Sanni for ninth all-time on the WVU scoring list. She now has 1,607 career points at West Virginia and needs 35 points to top Liz Repella for eighth all-time.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Wednesday, February 14th at the WVU Coliseum as they host Kansas at 7 p.m.
