Texas Too Much For WVU

Published

The No. 6 ranked Texas Longhorns (19-4, 10-2) proved to be too much for the West Virginia (17-7, 5-7) women’s basketball team on Monday night, as they powered their way to a 73-55 victory at the WVU Coliseum.

Texas’ size proved to be too much for West Virginia to handle, as they out-scored the Mountaineers 38-12 in the paint. The Longhorns were led by 18 points and 10 rebounds from junior forward Jatarie White. Guard Ariel Atkins added 17 points, and aided Texas in a 9-0 run to end the game.

Three-point shooting kept West Virginia in the game as they made 10-of-20 shots from beyond the arc. Junior Naomi Davenport tallied 14 points and senior Teana Muldrow added 12. Both players went 3-of-5 from distance.

Rebounding proved to be another area in which the Longhorns dominated WVU, claiming a 44-34 advantage on the glass. Their 11 offensive boards also earned them 17 second chance points.

Texas started the game on a 7-0 run, which was answered by some sharp shooting from West Virginia, which was 5-of-8 from long range in the first quarter. But, strong second and fourth quarters in which the Longhorns outscored the Mountaineers 19-7 and 17-9, respectively, were able to shut the door.

West Virginia has now dropped three straight games. The Mountaineers will return to action on Saturday, February 10 when they travel to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech at 3 p.m.
