North Texas Names Next Head Coach, Ends Speculation of Graham Harrell Leaving WVU

Any speculation about North Texas hiring West Virginia offensive coordinator Graham Harrell as the Mean Green’s next head coach can now end.

North Texas has announced Washington State offensive coordinator Eric Morris will be their next head coach. Harrell’s name was brought up in rumors for the North Texas job due to his past tenure at the school. There was also an interesting aspect to the possibility of a WVU coach leaving for Denton, Texas soon after the Mountaineers hired the program’s new athletic director Wren Baker away from North Texas.

Is Graham Harrell Destined to Leave WVU to be North Texas’ Head Coach?

But instead of Harrell replacing a coach he once worked under, it will be Morris taking over for Seth Littrell, who arrived just before Baker did in Denton, Texas back in 2016. Littrell led North Texas to six bowl appearances and two trips to the Conference USA title game, but failing to win any of those big games meant the Group of 5 program was looking for someone else to take them to the next level.

Harrell’s arrival in Morgantown last offseason sparked high expectations, especially when his hire caught the eye of former top prospect quarterback JT Daniels. Adding Harrell then led to Daniels deciding to transfer to WVU as well. Fast forward to the present day, after a rough 5-7 season for the Mountaineers that saw Daniels eventually lose his stating role to Garrett Greene, he decided to transfer yet again.

It now appears Harrell will be back at WVU in hopes of getting things turned around. As far as who will be his starting quarterback this time around, that still remains to be seen.
