Randy Moss Opens Up About Battling Cancer in Honest Interview
Months after overcoming his battle with cancer, Randy Moss is ready to talk about it. Moss sat down with fellow cancer survivor Robin Roberts on Good Morning America to fully unpack his cancer diagnosis and eventual return to ESPN.
Moss will be back on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” show this weekend to kickoff the new NFL season.
“I just think that when you live your life, you know, a certain type of way of, you know, eating right, taking care of your health, and all of a sudden you get diagnosed with cancer … I was overwhelmed,” Moss told Roberts. “It hit like a ton of bricks.”

Moss then detailed dealing with chemotherapy and radiation.
“I talk about my faith in the Lord. I talk about how much I love my family. And I talk about the game that I grew up loving at a small age, and that’s football,” he said. “I put one more ‘F’ in that, in that category, and that’s the ‘fight,’ because that’s what I needed to do.”
According to a TMZ report, Moss had to have parts of several organs removed during his battle with cancer.
Back in December, ESPN announced that Moss would be taking time away โfor an extended time to focus on a personal health challengeโ with no timetable set for his return. That announcement came weeks after Moss asked for prayers for an undisclosed personal medical issue.
Moss missed the final two months of the 2024 NFL season before returning to be part of the company’s Super Bowl coverage.
โFor nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable member of the team, consistently elevating โCountdownโ with his insight and passion. He has ESPNโs full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready,โ said the network in a statement.
Before catching the NFL by storm in 1998, the Rand, W.Va. native caught 174 passes for 3,529 yards and scored 54 touchdowns in two seasons at Marshall. He set several national and school records during his time in college football.
Most notably, Moss won the 1997 Biletnikoff Award, which is presented annually to the nationโs best wide receiver. His 26 touchdowns set an FBS (Division-I) record. Overall, Moss recorded 96 receptions for 1,820 yards that season.
