Rankings: WVU Basketball’s Potential Candidates Based on Resume

WVU Basketball is currently search for its next head coach after moving on from interim HC Josh Eilert last Wednesday. Let’s take a look at who has the best resume out of West Virginia’s potential candidates.

1. Dusty May, FAU

Age: 47

Current record: 25-8 (14-4 AAC)

Career timeline: Florida Atlantic (2018-)

NCAAT appearances: 2 (2023 – FINAL FOUR, 2024)

May’s final four run with FAU in 2023 puts him above everyone else. His build of national relevancy for the Owls puts up on top of everyone’s list.

2. Darian DeVries, Drake

Age: 48

Current record: 28-6 (16-4 MVC)

Career timeline: Drake (2018-)

NCAAT appearances: 3 (2021, 2023-24)

DeVries has shown the most consistency out of the rest of the group with three NCAA Tournament appearances and never having less than 20 wins during his six seasons at Drake.

3. Niko Medved, Colorado State

Age: 50

Current record: 24-10 (10-8 Mountain West)

Career timeline: Furman (2013-17), Drake (2017-18), Colorado State (2018-)

NCAAT appearances: 2 (2022, 2024)

Medved has shown consistency in getting CSU to the NCAA Tournament twice during his tenure. Medved could use a tournament win to raise his stock.

4. Mark Byington, James Madison

Age: 47

Current record: 31-3 (15-3 Sun Belt)

Career timeline: Georgia Southern (2013-20), James Madison (2020-)

NCAAT appearances: 1 (2024)

Byington is coaching the popular Cinderella pick in this year’s March Madness. Byington has had tough jobs at Georgia Southern and JMU, keeping both schools relevant but this is his first tournament ever.

5. Dustin Kerns, App State

Age: 44

Current record: 27-6 (16-2 Sun Belt)

Career timeline: Presbyterian (2017-19), App State (2019-)

NCAAT appearances: 1 (2021)

Kerns really needed to clinch the Sun Belt Tournament Title this month to get another tournament berth under his belt.
