Report: Former Mountaineer Mohamed Wague Getting Suspended for Elbow Incident

Former WVU and current Alabama forward Mohamed Wague is only being suspended one game for his actions during Wednesday night’s game, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander.

He received social media backlash on Wednesday night for an unnecessary elbow on a Florida defender.

Both Alabama and Florida players were trying to secure a loose ball off of a rebound opportunity when Wague’s knee accidentally struck Florida’s Alex Condon in the head. While Condon was gaining possession of the ball, Wague swung his right arm at the back of Condon’s head, which did not appear to be an accident.

Surprisingly, Florida was called for the foul on this play.

Many went on social media to call out Wague for the unnecessary play, some even calling it a “dirty play.” The New York Post even called Wague’s elbow “vicious.” College basketball analyst Seth Davis chimed in as well, stating that Wague should expect a multi-game suspension.

Wague’s player profile on Alabama’s website was temporarily down, but returned in short order.

This was the second time this season that Wague was caught committing dirty play. The former Mountaineer stepped on Johni Broome’s hand after a play vs. Auburn.

Wague, a junior out of Bronx, Ny., is currently in his first season with Alabama, averaging 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds through 23 games. Wague transferred out of West Virginia following Bob Huggins’ resignation back in June. WVU players were given an extra 30-day window to enter the transfer portal and Wague explored his options while West Virginia was deciding on a head coach. Wague received a lot of Power-5 interest while visiting Alabama and Kansas State during his recruitment.

Wague spent the 2022-2023 season as a Mountaineer after beginning his college career at Harcum College in Pennsylvania. He appeared in 28 games, averaging 4.1 points per game, 3.1 rebounds per game and shooting 74% from the floor. Wague’s season was cut short the final month of the year after suffering a foot injury.
