As Ross Hodge prepares for his debut season, the WVU basketball schedule continues to take shape. And on Wednesday, a new intriguing non conference series appears to be on the books.

According to John Rothstein of CBS Sports, West Virginia has scheduled a new neutral site series with Wake Forest. This two-year series will start somewhere in West Virginia and then pivot to Greensboro for the 2026-27 season.

This provides WVU an opportunity to face a fellow Power Four program in addition to the Big 12 schedule and in-season tournaments. It also will offer a chance for fans outside of Morgantown to see the Mountaineers up close, at least that’s the expectation depending on where the game in West Virginia ends up being scheduled.

The series tipping off in West Virginia also adds a sense of WVU being viewed as the higher profile program, which is the case historically.

As far as some notable parts of the rest of the schedule, the Mountaineers will face UCF, Cincinnati, and Kansas State twice in Big 12 play, both at home and on the road.

They will host Baylor, BYU, Colorado, Kansas, Texas Tech and Utah at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers will travel to face Arizona, Arizona State, Houston, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and TCU. Dates and times for each matchup have yet to be announced.

WVU Basketball Learns Big 12 Matchups, Locations

The 2025-26 season will mark the first for Hodge. The Mountaineers missed the NCAA Tournament last season despite ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi listing them as a lock heading into the conference tournament. They last made the Big Dance in 2023 under Basketball Hall of Famer Bob Huggins.

College basketball programs typically play 31 games during the regular season: the Mountaineersโ€™ conference schedule accounts for 18 of those games, leaving them with 13 out of conference matchups to boost their rรฉsumรฉ. For one of those matchups, theyโ€™ll host the hated Pittsburgh Panthers on Thursday, Nov. 13 in the 192nd occurrence of the Backyard Brawl.

this is stupid for scheduling an acc team in the early part of this season,, baker should be scheduling a div 2 team so hokie pokie can get at least one win in pre conf play… this will be a disaster playing WF on the road,, and where is there a neutral site in wv that can hold more than 4 or 5 thousand,, maybe the civic center in charleston, but why play there when you can bring wf to motown, and at least let the student body watch us get our rears kicked,, maybe that’s the reason it’s not going to be in motown

If history is any indication, WF is the one that has some work to do (WVU leads the series 7-3). WF is probably still smarting from the 2005 loss in the NCAA to WVU (WF was a 2 seed, WVU a 7 seed). Chris Paul was on that WF team. I don’t have any problem with the match-up, losses in basketball are more forgiving than in football; especially if they occur early in the season. Besides, I don’t see WF as all that anyway. I see the neutral site as probably Charleston.
