MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After praising his freshman quarterback’s performance following WVU’s upset of Houston on Saturday, Rich Rodriguez talked candidly about what Scotty Fox still needs to work on Tuesday.

While Rodriguez reiterated that Fox “played well, especially for a freshman” as West Virginia’s offense enjoyed its most productive game all year, he also made it clear that the young quarterback has plenty of room to grow.

Rodriguez pointed to “seeing the whole field” and anticipating checks and even the next play call as what will get Fox to the next level. The improved play of the offensive line aided Fox as well, according to his head coach.

Showing growth and progression from his previous games, Fox completed 59% of his passes for 154 yards against a formidable Cougars defense. And even more indicative of success in Rodriguezโ€™s offense, the true freshman ran for 65 yards and scored two touchdowns with his legs.

โ€œOur freshman quarterback is growing up. Heโ€™s really poised, seeing things out there, proud of the way he played,โ€ Rodriguez stated during his postgame press conference.

Rodriguez already knew Fox had the ability run, and thatโ€™s why he was even more impressed by what his new starter showed with his arm. The 24-yard touchdown pass Fox put on a rope to Cam Vaughn exemplified his arm strength more than any other moment from the game.

โ€œHe took care of the ball, didnโ€™t throw it into harmโ€™s way, and was seeing the field. Our quarterbacks make so many decisions in our offense in the run game, the pass game, youโ€™re not going to be 100% but for a young guy, he was pretty solid. He ran the ball well. Heโ€™s got next-level arm talent, and you can see that. Thereโ€™s not a throw he canโ€™t make, and he made some phenomenal ones today,โ€ explained Rodriguez.

Itโ€™s safe to say Fox has earned the right to continue starting and developing in the final weeks of the season.
