After receiving the news that they did get into the field on Selection Sunday, the West Virginia women’s basketball team now knows exactly when they will be playing.

WVU, who earned a 10 seed, will meet 7 seed Arizona at noon ET this coming Friday. The game, which will take place in College Park, Maryland, will be televised on ESPN.

The Mountaineers were placed in the Greenville bracket of the NCAA Women’s Tournament in head coach Dawn Plitzuweitโ€™s first season on the job in Morgantown.

Prior to WVU, Plitzuweit was the head coach at South Dakota, where her team made a Sweet 16 run just last year as a 10-seed. That tournament run included a win over two-seeded Baylor.

She qualified for three consecutive NCAA tournaments to end her tenure at South Dakota, though only participated in the last two due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While this is her fourth consecutive admission to the tournament, it is only West Virginiaโ€™s 14th such appearance.

The Greenville 1 bracketย has South Carolina as the No. 1 seed, but the winner of West Virginiaโ€™s game wonโ€™t have to go through the Gamecocks until the Elite Eight, if either were to make it that far.

If West Virginia were to defeat Arizona, then theyโ€™d likely face the bracketโ€™s No. 2 seed Maryland (25-6, 15-3 Big Ten), who takes on Holy Cross (23-8, 13-5) in their first round game. Maryland is also the menโ€™s first round opponent, making a possible interesting edition to the two state schoolsโ€™ historic sports rivalry.
