Senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff and the WVU basketball team were locked into a back-and-forth battle Tuesday night, trading blows with the Cincinnati Bearcats.

After trailing for over five minutes with the Mountaineers running out of time, Eaglestaff made a highlight worthy play to give WVU control once again. As the shot clock expired, Eaglestaff drilled a turnaround three-pointer to give WVU the lead with 1:12 remaining in the game.

Eaglestaff described the play in the postgame press conference.

“I turned to my shoulder and threw it up, and then once I threw it up, Coach Martinez and Jack on the bench are like, ‘Oh, that’s good.’ And I’m just praying. I’m like, ‘Please go in.’ Blessed to be in that situation, blessed to get this opportunity and, uh, it was a great win,” Eaglestaff said.

Eaglestaff added the shot helps further his confidence, but the team gains it from the belief head coach Ross Hodge has in them. He recalled what Hodge said in a timeout during the game.

“Six minutes left, come in that huddle and coach is like, ‘We got this. We’re going to win this game.’ Like none of us were like over-happy or too sad. We were just staying ready to play and we all knew what it was,” Eaglestaff said. “Blessed to have that type of coaching staff who believe in the players in front of them for it.”

Hodge spoke on Eaglestaff’s shot as well, highlighting his work ethic and character as reasons he can succeed.

“Trey was kind of pinned in over there, but it was just awesome for him, man. Again, he’s put in so much work. He cares so deeply about his teammates, about this university, about this state,” Hodge said. “And it was cool to see that level again. I think that’s, like, your character, your work ethic, you get favor from that.”

WVU basketball will play again at noon on Jan. 10 at the Hope Coliseum when the Mountaineers host the No. 22 Kansas Jayhawks.
