The West Virginia University baseball team was ranked No. 21 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason Poll, announced late Tuesday.

The Mountaineers are one of six teams to appear in the preseason poll which ranks the nation’s top 35 teams along with Texas Tech (No. 4), Texas (No. 9), TCU (No. 11), Oklahoma (No. 22) and Oklahoma State (No. 26).

WVU has been featured in the NCBWA Preseason Poll in each of the last two seasons and three out of the last four seasons.

West Virginia posted an 11-5 record in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season — the school’s best 16-game start since 2009 — and brings back 25 players from that team. Among the returning Mountaineers are preseason All-Big 12 picks in junior infielder Tyler Doanes, junior catcher/designated hitter Paul McIntosh and junior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf. The Mountaineers also appeared in the D1Baseball.com Preseason Top 25 at No. 14.

WVU is scheduled to open its season March 26 at home for a three-game Big 12 series against Kansas at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown.
