West Virginia Lands Commitment from 2024 Dual-Threat QB

West Virginia has secured a commitment from a potential quarterback of the future. Khalil Wilkins (6-foot-4, 190 pounds), a class of 2024 Roosevelt High School product out of Washington, D.C., announced he’s committing to WVU in a tweet Sunday afternoon.

WV Sports Now caught up with Wilkins about a month ago. “I really like what they’re doing with their offense and it definitely fits my game,” Wilkins said about WVU.

After utilizing quarterbacks who fit better into an “Air Raid” style offense in the recent past, the Mountaineers are going back to what’s led the program to some of its best seasons ever. This is something that Wilkins has noticed, and now makes him fit in as a candidate to guide West Virginia in the future.

A major conference school isn’t going to send an offer to just any player. There’s a reason why Wilkins qualified in the eyes of the WVU coaching staff. So what did Wilkins hear from West Virginia upon learning of his offer?

Why Would West Virginia Covet Wilkins?

Wilkins says he was told it’s all about the fit. “My coaches and I had a good conversation with Coach (Sean) Reagan. He talked about the things he likes about my game and how he saw me fitting at WVU,” he said.

This explains why West Virginia likes Wilkins so much even though he’s failed to garner any star ratings or recognition nationally. According to Wilkins, Maryland and Penn State are intrigued by his game too and are other Power Five schools he’s been hearing from.

“I’m a competitor. I work hard, but when the lights come on I hit another gear. I’d like to think I have the right combination of skills for my position and competitiveness that inspires my guys around me” is how Wilkins describes him as a player. Wilkins could be someone Mountaineer Nation loves cheering as he leads the Old Gold and Blue at Milan Puskar Stadium.

With still one more high school season left, Wilkins knows he has plenty to work on in order to remain an attractive recruit for WVU and other similar programs. He knows he needs to take advantage of his 2023 season to be ready for the next level.

“Like most quarterbacks, we all need as many reps in front of live defenses as possible. That way we can get experience dissecting multiple defenses,” Wilkins said.
