West Virginia, Marshall Share Statements About Death of Shawn Clark
As the college football community mourns the loss of Shawn Clark, both WVU and Marshall released statements about the West Virginia native’s death.
Clark, 50, was confirmed as dead on Monday, Sept. 22. He died unexpectedly two weeks after suffering a “medical emergency,” UCF revealed.
“Mountaineer football sends our thoughts and condolences to the family of Coach Clark, all who loved him and the UCF football program during this difficult time,” posted the WVU football program on their official social media accounts.

Marshall head coach Tony Gibson, who shared a personal relationship with Clark, expressed what the loss of his friend means to him.
“We lost a great man and a great friend. Shawn is one of the best people I have ever been around. He was a true friend in this profession that I leaned on a lot and I will miss him dearly,” said Gibson.

Mostly known for his tenure as Appalachian State’s head coach from 2020-24, Clark was most recently serving as offensive line coach under Scott Frost at UCF in 2025.
