It’s an end of an era at an historic program in the Big 12. Effective as of Tuesday, Mike Gundy is no longer the head coach at Oklahoma State after being fired by the Cowboys.

The news of Gundy’s dismissal comes only one day after he pledged his desire to remain with the program. Gundy, 58, said it is his ย “100 percent” intention to remain with the Cowboys beyond the 2025 season on Monday.

“I’m under contract, here, for I think 3ยฝ years,” said Gundy during his weekly press conference. “When I was hired here to take this job, ever since that day, I’ve put my heart and soul into this and I will continue to do that until at some point, if I say I don’t want to do it or if somebody else says we don’t want you to do it.”

But regardless of what Gundy wanted, Oklahoma State still made the decision to his two-decade long tenure.

Gundy’s final game with the Cowboys was a 19-12 loss to Tulsa, which dropped the team’s record to 1-2 through the first three games of the season.

Oklahoma State will now owe Gundy $15 million.

Gundy, who took over as head coach in 2005 after serving as offensive coordinator from 2001-04, compiled an overall a record of 170-90. He led the Cowboys to eight 10-win seasons, including a 2011 Big 12 title, and a 12-6 mark in bowl games. Most recently, Gundy led the Cowboys to an appearance in the 2023 Big 12 Championship Game.
