Mountaineers in the Pros
West Virginia Products Zach Frazier, Beanie Bishop Officially Make Steelers Roster
As NFL teams cut down their roster this week, a pair of Mountaineers officially learned they made the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2024 regular season roster. And while Zach Frazier was a lock, especially after securing a starting role, Beanie Bishop made the team after being signed as an undrafted free agent.
After making cuts, the Steelers revealed their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday night, showing Frazier as the starting center and Bishop among their defensive backs.

Even though Frazier wanted to earn the Steelers starting job by full merit and not thanks to an injury, the rookie center is confident he’s ready for the opportunity.
On the heels of moving up the depth chart due to Nate Herbig being placed on injured reserve, Frazier talked about the situation and his mentality on Tuesday.
“I’d never wish that on anyone. I feel really bad for Nate (Herbig), but he’s really helped me out a lot. He didn’t have to help me at all. I wouldn’t be as far as I am right now without him,” said Frazier about how Herbig has been a mentor to him.
Frazier also explained how he’s been preparing as if he’s the starter since being drafted by the Steelers in the second round.
“That’s always been my goal. I didn’t want to be a backup. I was gonna shoot to earn that starting job. That’s just my mentality. I always want to be on the field and earn it if I can.”
As far as how Frazier has performed through two preseason games, PFF shows he’s been perfect in one particular category.
Frazier allowed zero pressures in 24 pass block snaps for a grade of 82.3, per PFF. They also award Frazier a grade of 80.7 overall from his two preseason appearances. He’s hasn’t allowed a pressure in 42 pass blocking snaps either.
At this point, it’s well documented that Bishop has been carrying a giant chip on his shoulder most of his life. It’s because of that chip that Bishop became a consensus All-American at WVU and has been impressing Mike Tomlin and the rest of the Steelers’ coaching staff during training camp.
Steelers DB Beanie Bishop on Source of Motivation: ‘The Chip Never Leaves My Shoulder’
“The chip never leaves my shoulder,” said Bishop before training camp practice on Sunday. “Even when I get done playing, I will always have the chip on my shoulder just because of the way that I grew up and things like that. It’s just something that never leaves me.”
These comments came just two days after Bishop experienced a big opportunity early in his NFL career – starting at nickel in his preseason debut with the Steelers. Bishop offered his own evaluation of his performance.
“I think I did a solid job,” he said. “There were some plays that I kind of left out there. Made a couple of mistakes. Things I can build off of being my first game and things like that. Next week I’m going to build off of that and correct the mistakes that I made and try not to have them again.”
