West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins made himself the biggest topic in the college basketball world on Monday, using an anti-gay slur twice over the radio towards Xavier fans. Huggins quickly apologized, saying that he will accept any consequences coming his way.

WVU athletic director Wren Baker ran into the media before the coaches caravan in Wheeling, mentioning that he will release another statement later.

“We don’t really have anything else at this time. I was on my way here so hadn’t had a chance to really get all of the facts and information. But as soon as we do, we will have another follow-up statement,” Baker said.

Baker did mentioned that he spoke with Huggins “briefly” after the comments. Baker was scheduled to speak on a Big 12 radio show on Wednesday morning, but canceled, according to sources.

Huggins will receive a punishment, no doubt about it. He even seemed to expect it in his public apology, saying, “There are consequences for our words and actions and I will fully accept any coming my way.”

The question is how severe does the University make the punishment?

West Virginia University is in a tough position — a lose-lose situation. There has been a debate over social media whether or not Huggins should be granted another chance. National media members are split with their own opinions as well.

“I’m stunned by these damaging and offensive comments,” ESPN’s Jay Bilas told WVSN. “What West Virginia’s leadership does in response is up to them, however, the actions West Virginia takes will clearly reveal its true values to all.”

The longer the University waits, the worse the situation can look. Huggins may be suspended, fined or even dismissed. The Basketball Hall of Fame coach will have to face the consequences of what not to say in the world of today.

As for the current team, the transfer portal closes on Thursday. Huggins and his coaching staff have brought in a top transfer class this offseason. It is unknown whether or not the actions of Huggins will cause the departure of some players, but it’s absolutely something to monitor.

WV Sports Now will keep you up to date on the result of Huggins’ actions.
