Whats at Stake for the Mountaineers this Saturday

Published

on

The West Virginia Mountaineers need to beat the Texas Longhorns on Saturday to secure the number two seed in the Big XII Conference Tournament or if the Texas Tech Red Raiders were to lose against the Texas Christian Horned Frogs.

If the Mountaineers get the two seed, they will face the winner of the 7/10 seed on Thursday night at 7:00 pm Est. The tenth seed is set with Iowa State, but the seventh seed mainly depends on the Baylor/Kansas State game on Saturday at 2:00 pm Est.

If Baylor wins West Virginia will face the winner of Oklahoma/Iowa State. If Baylor loses then Oklahoma can takeover the sixth seed with a win over Iowa State on Saturday at 9:00 pm Est.

To recap: A West Virginia win and Baylor win means West Virginia faces the winner of the Oklahoma/Iowa State. A West Virginia win, a Baylor loss and an Oklahoma wins puts the Mountaineers against the winner of Baylor/Iowa State.

Now if West Virginia was to lose at Texas and Texas Tech wins at TCU that would move West Virginia to the three seed. Now you must look at the Baylor game again.

If Baylor wins, the Mountaineers will play Kansas State on Thursday night 9:00 pm Est. A Baylor loss and an Oklahoma win would put the Sooners against West Virginia. If both Baylor and Oklahoma lose the Mountaineers will play Baylor.

Oklahoma State could throw a curveball in all of this and would jump up to sixth with a Baylor loss. Now if Baylor wins, the Cowboys would take seventh because they would own the tie-breaker over Oklahoma.

List of teams West Virginia could face in the first game of the Big XII Conference Tournament:

Oklahoma

Iowa State

Baylor

Kansas State

Oklahoma State

The Mountaineers play at noon Est. If they win games to watch:

Baylor @ Kansas State 2:00 pm Est

Kansas @ Oklahoma State 4:00 pm Est

Iowa State @ Oklahoma 9:00 pm Est

If the Mountaineers lose you add those three games along with Texas Tech @ TCU 4:00 pm Est. That makes every Big XII game matter to set the final standings.
