As the WVU baseball team enters a new week with their season-best win streak intact, they are seeing the fruits of that labor result in national recognition. West Virginia has now jumped from No. 24 up seven more spots to No. 17 in D1Baseball’s poll.

The Mountaineers went 4-0 last week, beating Marshall and then sweeping Cincinnati to extend their lead in the Big 12 standings. Most recently, West Virginia beat the Bearcats 10-5 at Kendrick Family Ballpark on Saturday. The Mountaineers improved to 34-4 overall and 13-3 in Big 12 play.

D1Baseball’s co-owner Kendall Rogers offered his thoughts about WVU after they completed their latest sweep on Saturday.

“Just a really impressive offensive club and the pitching continues to show plenty of promise. RPI up to 14 and stock is soaring,” he said.

Beyond D1Baseball, the Mountaineers are ranked as high as No. 9 thanks to Perfect Game and WVU is ranked No. 14 by Baseball America, with both polls having ranked West Virginia on a more consistent basis this season.

Despite the recognition being something fans have called for, WVU head coach Steve Sabins downplayed his concern while talking with media, including Mike Asti of WV Sports Now, via Zoom on April 14.

Sabins reiterated that heโ€™s only focused on winning, not worrying about rankings. He also said that he respects the crew at D1Baseball and their resistance to rank West Virginia throughout the season was not brought up during his recent conversation with members of the outlet over the weekend.

โ€œThey have their job to do and Iโ€™ve got my job to do. I donโ€™t keep up too closely with any of that. Whether we feel disrespected or not is not something I worry about.โ€

The Mountaineers continue to be among the Big 12’s best teams according to the rankings. Baseball America has Arizona (No. 21) and TCU (No. 23) ranked, while D1Baseball just has Arizona ranked (No. 16).

West Virginia will hit the road this week, starting with a game in State College against Penn State on Tuesday night before traveling to Orlando to meet UCF for a weekend series.
