Last night, the West Virginia baseball team traveled to Charleston to take on Marshall at Appalachian Power Park to kick off their fall slate.

The Herd jumped out to a 4-0 lead early, but in the sixth inning freshman Matt McCormick plated a run on an RBI groundout, which was followed by a Tyler Doanes RBI double to cut the Herd lead to 4-2.

Redshirt junior pitcher Haden Erbe got the start for West Virginia, but struggled as he gave up four runs in two innings of work. From there on out, the Mountaineers pitching staff stringed together some quality work from freshmen Tyler Strechay, Jake Carr, Carter Lyles and others.

West Virginia got the bats going again in the eighth inning with an RBI double from infielder Ryan Archibald to tie the game at 4-4, then an RBI base hit from sophomore catcher Vince Ippoliti to give the Mountaineers their first lead of the game. However, the lead would not last long as Marshall would tie things in the ninth to send it to extras.

In the 10th frame, freshman Tyler DeMartino sent a shot to the outfield that resulted in a double, driving in all three runners giving WVU a 8-5 lead.

The Herd scratched a couple runs in the bottom half of the inning, but came up just short as West Virginia snags the win 8-7.

The Mountaineers return home next Friday for a rematch with Marshall with game time scheduled for 6:30 pm. Admission for the game is free.
