With the 2025 season set to get underway in a couple weeks, WVU baseball head coach Steve Sabins revealed some bad news during a talk with reporters on Monday.

While addressing his team’s health, Sabins said left handed pitcher Maxx Yehl will miss the entire year after undergoing Tommy John Surgery.

Beyond the rosters changes and transfer additions, not having Yehl as an option will be a noticeable differencefor the Mountaineers this season. Yehl led the team with 24 appearances in 2024.

Yehl, a junior out of Portville, N.Y., was 2-0 with a 3.99 ERA. Yehl also had 32 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched.

To increase the already high expectations on Sabins in his first season at the helm of the WVU baseball program, the Mountaineers are expected to finish near the top of the Big 12. On Jan. 23, the conference revealed the 2025 preseason poll as voted on by the leagueโ€™s head coaches, showing West Virginia predicted to be fourth.

WVU Baseball Receives Highest Preseason Prediction Since Joining Big 12

This is the highest predicted finish for WVU since joining the Big 12 in 2013. West Virginia won the regular season conference title in 2023.

The Mountaineers are coming off an historic 2024 campaign in which they finished 36-24 and reached the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time. Sabins now looks to lead WVU to a regional appearance for the third straight season.

With a succession plan already in place, Sabins officially took over when former head coach Randy Mazey retired at the conclusion of West Virginiaโ€™s postseason run.
