WVU Baseball dropped their home series opener with the Kansas Jayhawks at 9:19 p.m. on Thursday, May 15; thirty minutes later, they clinched their first outright Big 12 regular season title in program history, benefitting from an Arizona State loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

West Virginia won a share of the Big 12 regular season title in 2023, tying with Oklahoma State and Texas. This year, their first under head coach Steve Sabins, they stand alone atop the standings. Benefitting the Mountaineers (40-11, 19-7 Big 12) were a pair of weather cancellations at Oklahoma State earlier in the season.

The conference standings hinge on win percentage rather than total wins, so despite having just one more win than the second place Sun Devils, in effect the Mountaineers have a pair of games in hand.

That breathing room might come in handy as the Mountaineers backed into the championship, dropping four of their last five games… including a trio of late blown leads as their bullpen began to struggle. Even with the conference title clinched, West Virginia still has something to play for in the last two games of the regular season.

After tailing off down the stretch, they’ll need to put their best foot forward in order to increase their chances of hosting a regional in the NCAA Tournament. Two weeks ago, that looked like a given, but now they’ll need to sweat it out.
