WVU Baseball returned to their winning ways on Friday, April 25, pushing past UCF 4-1 in Orlando with a late-inning rally.

While they scored four runs, the Mountaineers (35-5, 14-3 Big 12) managed just one hit, a seventh inning single from Kyle West; UCF racked up nine. Four walks and six hit batters helped West Virginia even the playing field on the way to a comfortable win.

West Virginia loaded the bases in the fifth inning via two hit batters and a walk. Grant Hussey opened a 1-0 lead after trotting home on a Spencer Barnett sacrifice fly, but the Knights managed to escape the inning after catching Brodie Kresser in a rundown on the play.

Mountaineers starter Griffin Kirn logged two quick outs in the bottom of the frame, sitting at an economical 50 pitches. A throwing error sparked a UCF rally, leading to an RBI single, and head coach Steve Sabins gave Kirn the hook.

Kresser plated West with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, then the Mountaineers loaded the bases in the eighth thanks to a series of free passes from UCF: an error, a hit batter and a walk. Sam White lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-1, then Jace Rinehart added another insurance run with a groundout.

The Knights loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Chase Meyer rebounded for a pair of strikeouts, putting up a zero after ending the inning on a fielders’ choice.

Carson Estridge logged the save with two runners aboard, drawing a three pitch strikeout before inducing a double play to slam the door.

WVU Baseball looks to take their series with the Knights beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
