MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – While it took a strong effort from the team to knock off No. 2 Iowa State, WVU head coach Darian DeVries feels his Mountaineers didn’t do it alone. After their 64-57 victory, DeVries credited two additional factors beyond his players for the big win.

First, DeVries noted that he believes West Virginia may have benefit from some divine intervention. Of course, that’s referring to Jerry West Day and the Mountaineers picking up a staple victory on a night focused on honoring the legacy of West.

“Itโ€™s just an incredible day on a day where we get to celebrate his legacy. Not only for West Virginia basketball but for the sport itself. To have so many of his family and loved ones here and to be a part of this, I think you can only assume that he had a little helping hand in this one tonight.” said DeVries about making West proud.

But besides any influence from West from above, DeVries also showed his appreciation to the crowd, and for good reason. The WVU Coliseum experienced a sell out, announcing a fitting number of 14,444 fans in attendance. DeVries felt the energy and his players fed off the atmosphere as well.

However, it was Javon Small and company who actually did the necessary work to win the game.

โ€œOur guys are giving us everything they got. Just leaving it out there,” said DeVries.

Small scored 27 points with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

โ€œHeโ€™s the best guard in the country. Heโ€™s something special,โ€ DeVries said to praise Small after the game.

For another notable individual performance, Amani Hansberry added 12 points and had six rebounds off the bench.

For a related story, West Virginia honored Jerry Westโ€™s family members and announced that Westโ€™s No. 44 will be retired across all sports.
