WVU HC Neal Brown Expresses Disappointment After PSU Loss: ‘We Played Bad Football’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU head coach Neal Brown wasn’t about to make any excuses for his team after their 34-12 season opening loss to Penn State.

“We played bad football. We played really poorly. And it was on a big stage and I’m aware of that,” said Brown at the start his postgame press conference.

Brown then went even further to say linebacker Josiah Trotter and safety Anthony Wilson were the only players who played well enough to him. He did add Wyatt Milum played well when in, too.

And even though he couched everything with the fact he stills needs to watch the full game film, Brown stressed his disappointment with his veteran players most of all.

“We are a veteran group and my expectations for this group are extremely high.” Overall, Brown believes his players shouldn’t have felt any anxiety due to their preparation all week and he’s most upset about the lack of execution from such a veteran group. He said he did not see his veteran players not being ready for the game coming.

On how Garrett Greene performed on Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” national stage, Brown made it clear that everything else is difficult when your quarterback doesn’t play up to par. “Not good enough. And I love the kid. He’ll play better football,” said Brown while evaluating Greene’s play as the leader of the Mountaineers.

Despite admitting his team didn’t play well enough to beat anyone, let alone one of the best teams in the country, Brown did express criticism in the replay system. A confused Brown asked why the replay system exists if it’s not implemented when it’s needed and mistakes are still made during the reviews.

“We shouldn’t have mistakes on replay.”

In closing, Brown said he still believes in his team and knows they can reach their potential.

Up next for the Neal Brown-led Mountaineers is a date with Albany back at Milan Puskar Stadium to get ready for a return to Pittsburgh for another edition of the Backyard Brawl.

What’s the line…Albany needs to give WVU at least a touchdown maybe 10 points

It seems that there’s to much cockness attitude in the starting offense and that was obvious before the game, especially with Garrett Greene and he needs to humble himself until he is ready to play as well as he’s been acting.
Team leaders are the heart and spirit of the team and they have a duty to present themselves in the correct attitude and focus on the team and the game at hand.
Save the grandstanding until after the victory and then they will have earned the right to throw out their chest and crow without embarrassing themselves for being overly confident and taking the come game for granted.
I hate having to say this about the Mountaineers, but I’ve been a fan since Bobby Bowben and Don Nielon and before for 55 years and West Virginia represents the entire Mountaineer nation and I believe that they are capable of playing much better than this, but you have earn bragging rights

Brown is so worried about mistakes on replay. Is he aware that those refs GIFTED him WVU’s only TD? We are all tired of his incompetence and horrible play calling. He needs to go back to where he came from. He can’t play with the big boys.

Garrett Green is not a power 5 quarterback.
His long passes are not accurate.

Neil Brown needs to go. We are all fed up with his terrible decisions relating to play calling.

3rd or 4th and 1 mutiple times and Neil Brown continues to call a power run up the middle against the top rated rush defense in the country and gets stopped every time?
Really? Basic football strategy 101. I’m sure everyone in the stadium including the entire country as well as Penn State obviously knew what play this asshole was going to call.
Get rid of him please!! For God’s sake, stop the bleeding then maybe we can get some 4 and 5 star recruits.

It was also obvious to everyone in the stadium that the Penn State receiver flagrantly pushed off WVU’s defensive back and when the officials didn’t call it Neil Brown just stood there and did absolutely nothing!!
Get rid him. It’s worth the buy out.

Should’ve been gone years ago. He’s out of his league and not once did he truly accept any of the blame. WVU spends a lot of money for crap and it’s useless. Doesn’t matter what the situation may be. This is case in point. Can’t blame the players because they were all picked by him. Pack your stuff and go back to a little insignificant team. Shameful and embarrassing. Own the mess you created. Just because you grew a goatee doesn’t improve your coaching because you can’t improve on something you never had.
