Tony Fields transferred to West Virginia University for the final season of his college career because he was simply looking for a fresh start.

After starting at will linebacker for three years for the University of Arizona, Fields had established himself as one of the best defensive players in the Pac-12 conference. WVU coach Neal Brown was looking to add an experienced difference-maker to the Mountaineers’ defense and Fields ended up being a perfect fit. And so, the Las Vegas native landed in Morgantown.

Fields switch positions to mike linebacker and had a stellar season for the Mountaineers, He led the team with 88 total tackles to go along with four tackles for loss and an interception.

“The experience at mike definitely helped,” Fields said Thursday. “My first three years at U of A I played will linebacker so coming to play mike, having to set the edge, call the plays and learn a totally new position helped a lot.”

He was a First Team All-Big 12 selection and won the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Award following the season. Fields was also invited to the Reese’s Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine. After participating in WVU’s pro day in front of scouts from 27 teams, Fields said he is getting a pretty good idea of how NFL teams are valuing him.

“My agent’s given me day two, that’s a good look for me,” Fields said. “As of right now, if I get picked up, I’m happy. Anywhere I get picked up, whether it’s first, second, third or even free agency, I’m still going to be happy.”

Fields said he has talked to all 32 NFL teams at this point and they like him at a variety of positions.

“I’ve talked to all 32 teams, some of them more than once,” Fields said. “As of right now, I believe I’m still going to be playing will linebacker. Some teams have said mike linebacker and some teams have even told me nickel-type backer.”

Fields said his only hope for the draft is that he is selected by a team that has a good coach who can help him develop into an even better player. He said his favorite professionals to watch now are the Darius Leonard of the Colts and Devin White in Tampa Bay.

The 2021 NFL Draft will begin on April 29 in Cleveland, Ohio. Fields said he plans to travel back home to Vegas to continue training.
