The West Virginia University volleyball team opened its 2020 schedule on a down note Thursday as the Mountaineers lost 3-0 at Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders (1-0) took sets 25-17, 25-23 and 25-22 against WVU (0-1) at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas.

“I thought we had some good moments, but we were inconsistent, and that’s why we couldn’t score points,” WVU coach Reed Sunahara said after the game. “We have to be better than what we showed tonight, especially from a hitting standpoint. I thought our passing was decent, and I thought we got better and better every set. Hopefully, we can use that and build momentum into tomorrow.”

Preseason All-Big 12 pick Briana Lynch led West Virginia on Thursday with 11 kills on 22 attacks, while junior outside hitter Natali Petrova — making her Mountaineer debut — chipped in with 10 kills.

WVU volleyball is back at Texas Tech again on Friday. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on Big 12 Now.
