WVU Women’s Basketball suffered a crushing defeat in the desert on Saturday, falling 77-62 to the Arizona Wildcats.

For one of the only times this season, Arizona managed to use West Virginia’s template against them, forcing 21 Mountaineers’ turnovers. While JJ Quinerly managed to score 26 points, West Virginia went 1-of-12 from three, limiting their ability to keep pace as the Wildcats pulled ahead.

The Mountaineers (16-4, 6-3 Big 12) made just one shot in the first 4:42 of game time, allowing Arizona to open a 9-2 lead. They then ripped off a 9-2 run of their own to knot the score at 11, but Arizona still managed to take a two point lead into the second period. The wheels came off there, with the Wildcats outscoring West Virginia 29-15 on the way into the break, taking the lead by as much as 18 points.

The Mountaineers looked poised to mount a comeback in the third period, trimming the deficit to eight with a 6-0 run started by two free throws, a steal and a transition layup from Quinerly, but fouls and turnovers prevented them from any extended success.

Arizona scored 13 points in a row midway through the fourth quarter, prompting Mark Kellogg to call a timeout as the Mountaineers trailed by 20. By that point it was too late, and the Wildcats closed out the win with little fanfare.

Up next for WVU Women’s Basketball is a Saturday, Feb. 1 home game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys — who beat the Mountaineers in Stillwater earlier this month — set to begin at 12 p.m.
