WVU womenโs basketball picked up the 900th win in program history by crushing Arizona State on Wednesday, winning 89-59 on the road behind scoring outbursts from JJ Quinerly and Kylee Blacksten. Quinerly dropped 29 points, tying her second-best performance of the season. Blacksten scored 24, setting a career high.
The Mountaineers enjoyed one of their best shooting performances of the season, making 50% of shots from the field, 42.9% of those from three, and 24 0f 27 from the charity stripe as Arizona State got into foul trouble late.
Despite playing more than 2,000 miles away from Morgantown, West Virginia took control early, ripping off a 10-0 run in the first four minutes that forced a Sun Devils timeout.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers suffered a crushing defeat, falling 77-62 to the Arizona Wildcats.
For one of the only times this season, Arizona managed to use West Virginiaโs template against them, forcing 21 Mountaineersโ turnovers. While Quinerly managed to score 26 points, West Virginia went 1-of-12 from three, limiting their ability to keep pace as the Wildcats pulled ahead.
The Mountaineers made just one shot in the first 4:42 of game time, allowing Arizona to open a 9-2 lead. They then ripped off a 9-2 run of their own to knot the score at 11, but Arizona still managed to take a two-point lead into the second period. The wheels came off there, with the Wildcats outscoring West Virginia 29-15 on the way into the break, taking the lead by as many as 18 points.
The Mountaineers looked poised to mount a comeback in the third period, trimming the deficit to eight with a 6-0 run started by two free throws, a steal and a transition layup from Quinerly, but fouls and turnovers prevented them from any extended success. Arizona scored 13 points in a row midway through the fourth quarter as the Mountaineers trailed by 20.
WVU is inactive this week until the Mountaineers host Oklahoma State on Saturday at noon. West Virginia will be looking to avenge a 64-57 loss in Stillwater from earlier this month. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
