2024 Drake signee guard Emerson “KJ” Tenner announced on Saturday that he was granted a release from his National Letter of Intent from the University. Tenner now reopens his recruitment after Darian DeVries accepted the West Virginia job.

Tenner, who won Tennessee’s Mr. Basketball award this year, is a 6-foot prospect out of Cordova High School in Memphis. Tenner originally signed with Drake during the early period back in November.

Tenner released the following:

“First and foremost, I want to take the time to thank God as well as my family for helping me through this process and journey. I would also like to thank Drake University Athletics for their hospitality and treating me with the utmost love and kindness. After the news of Coach Devries leaving the program, and with prayer and careful thought and consideration… I have made the decision to reevaluate my options and have been granted a release from my National Letter of Intent from Drake University. My family and I will take this time to determine the best decision and path for my college career.”

Before committing to Drake, Tenner received offers from Arkansas State, Bradley, Central Michigan, Murray State, North Alabama, Texas State and others. Tenner also had interest from Memphis, Ole Miss and Tulane during his recruitment.

Tenner averaged 23 points as a senior and led the city of Memphis in scoring with 28 points per game as a sophomore.

DeVries has already brought over his son, Tucker, to West Virginia and has contacted other Drake players in the transfer portal. WVU currently has one signee for the 2024 class in guard Carmelo Adkins.
