Bob Huggins, former West Virginia head coach, is interested in the Louisville job opening, he tells Rick Bozich of 790 WDRB on Wednesday morning

“I’m really excited. I would be really excited,” Huggins said.

“I think it fits me perfect,” Huggins added.

Louisville has been searching for a head coach since firing Kenny Payne on March 12. UofL has been linked with many top names such as Scott Drew (Baylor), Mick Cronin (UCLA), Dusty May (FAU), Jerome Tang (Kansas State) and others but have struck out. Now Louisville is on names like Richard Pitino (New Mexico), Pat Kelsey (College of Charleston) and Josh Schertz (Indiana State).

Louisville basketball has had a rough stretch since the ending of Rick Pitino. The Cardinals, after tenures from Chris Mack and Kenny Payne, are in a dire situation to make the right hire.

Huggins, who has spent the last year outside of coaching, is looking to get back into it. Huggins resigned from West Virginia last June following a DUI arrest in Pittsburgh, which also came after Huggins said an anti-gay slur over Cincinnati radio waves a month prior. Huggins has since stayed sober and went to rehab.

This is the first time Huggins has publicly shown interest in the Louisville job.

“I would want to be and do what what coach [Denny] Crum did. I’ve always had a love for Louisville, believe it or not. I love going to Louisville and playing,” Huggins said. “I love the fan base, the way the way they embrace the team, the way they embrace Louisville basketball.”

“I think it’s a great place. I think it’s something that fits me perfectly. Much like Cincinnati did when I got to Cincinnati,” Huggins added.

Huggins has been getting involved more in media appearances recently, having a feature shown on KDKA-TV. Huggins was asked about his coaching future with Bob Pompeani.

“I think in the right situation, yeah. I don’t really want to leave West Virginia, but I don’t think I have much of a choice,” he said with Pompeani.

Huggins believes he could have another chance with WVU if one thing happens.

“If there’s a change in leadership,” Huggins added.

Huggins has 935 career wins, third all-time on the coaches wins list, and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.
