“I turned a 6 week injury into a 3 week one.” – Bruce Irvin

Bruce Irvin showed off his Mountaineer Mentality in his return against Houston.  He showed that nothing can stop him, not even a hamstring injury.  Irvin finished last season hot with 3.5 sacks in his final 4 games with Atlanta.  Yesterday, Irvin continued on that trend and managed to get a sack, 2 tackles and 2 QB hits.

Irvin didn’t get the start in the Panthers 16-10 win over the Texans, but he did make an impact.  In just 27 defensive plays, Irvin balled out.  The Panthers pass rush wreaked havoc on Deshaun Watson and his offensive line.  The Panthers defense totaled 6 sacks and Irvin was relevant in almost everyone of them.

As the season moves forward, it is uncertain what role Irvin will play for the Panthers.  However, it appears that he will be playing more defensive end than linebacker.  Irvin has been at his best when he lines up on the end instead of in the middle.

It comes as no surprise that Irvin fits the DE mold a lot better.  All you have to do is check some of Irvin’s WVU highlights to know that when lined up on the end, he was going to get to the QB.  With his rare combination of speed and power, it would make more sense to utilize his talents at DE.

Irvin and the Carolina Panthers will host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, 10/6 at 1:00 p.m.  I can tell you one thing, I would not want to be Gardner Minshew II come Sunday.
