WVU HC Darian DeVries wants to establish an identity with his new team in Morgantown. DeVries, who has brought in 14 new players to the program with a new-look staff, spoke with the media on Tuesday as the first week of official practice begins.

“I want our identity to be: you should be able to walk in the gym and everybody should walk out talking about how hard we play, how connected they are and feel that life and energy. That’s not only the team but also from our coaching staff. That enthusiasm and love to compete and try to play at the highest level. The x’s and o’s piece, if you don’t have those other things, then none of that matters,” DeVries said.

Since taking the job at WVU back in March, DeVries has shown respect for the players and coaches who come through the program, noting Bob Huggins, John Beilein, Jerry West and others. West Virginia basketball has had a national perception of being a tough team, and now DeVries looks to continue that under his tenure.

DeVries and his staff have brought in athletic defenders in Toby Okani and Secnire Harris, who have shown signs of toughness at their previous schools. West Virginia’s frontcourt has been a question all offseason, where Amani Hansberry and Eduardo Andre will highlight the five-spot.

West Virginia opens the season on Monday, Nov. 4 vs. Robert Morris and will host James Long and the University of Charleston on Oct. 18 for an exhibition game.

WV Sports Now will continue to provide offseason news for West Virginia basketball.
