With news spreading about Chad Scott’s WVU exit, fans are left speculating on who will replace him as running backs coach of the Mountaineers. Due to the homecoming theme of the 2025 with Pat White and Noel Devine returning to West Virginia to join Rich Rodriguez’s staff, the name Steve Slaton is also being thrown around.

Why not add one more WVU legend to the mix? Well, besides the fact, unlike White for example, Slaton is not in coaching and being a great player does not guarantee an ability to teach, he has absolutely no interest in the job.

A source told WV Sports Now the morning after the Scott to Texas news was reported nationally that Slaton has no desire to move back to Morgantown and join Rodriguez’s coaching staff.

But even though Slaton won’t be back in an official capacity as a coach, he still loves the Mountaineers and will be honored throughout the year.

In January, Slaton earned the ultimate honor for any college football player when he was announced as part of the College Football Hall of Fame’s 2025 class.

Slaton, widely regarded as the greatest running back in WVU history, totaled 3,923 rushing yards, averaged 5.9 yards per carry and scored 50 touchdowns on the ground during his three years in Morgantown. He also made 65 receptions for 805 yards. Slaton earned consensus All-American status in 2006 and was a key part of some of the most successful teams in program history.

An elusive running back who torched defenses with his explosive speed, Steve Slaton led West Virginia during one of the most successful periods in school history. The Levittown, Pa., native now becomes the seventh Mountaineer player to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.

For related content, Slaton joined Mike Asti on a show to discuss his WVU career and reveal some new information.
