Ex WVU, Current Houston RB to Miss Entire 2024 Season
A former Mountaineer will miss the entire 2024 season. Ex WVU and current Houston running back Tony Mathis received some bad news earlier in the week and will be out all year after suffering an ACL injury.
Mathis’ injury will require surgery, ending any hopes for a return this season. Prior to this injury, Mathis was in a competition to be Houston’s starting running back. The Houston Chronicle was first to report this news on Tuesday.
Mathis transferred to Houston during the offseason leading up to the 2023 season. He left West Virginia after spending four years under Neal Brown.
Mathis rushed for only 170 yards on 41 carries with the Cougars.
In his final WVU season in 2022, Mathis rushed for 562 yards in 135 attempts, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. Mathis recorded seven touchdowns in 27 career games played as a Mountaineer. The Cedartown, Ga. native was recruited out of high school as a 3-star prospect.
Mathis released the following when he entered the portal and left WVU.
“First, I want to thank God for the opportunity he’s blessed me with to even play the game I love. I would like to thank coach [Neal] Brown, coach Mitch and the whole strength staff I appreciate what y’all done for me coming straight out of high school. Huge thank you to Vince, Zach and the whole training staff for taking care of me my time being and I couldn’t thank y’all enough. The love for Mountaineer nation will always be 100!! This decision was the toughest because of the guys I had next to me on and off the field. The bond and love I have for y’all is forever and only we know that. Thank y’all for always supporting and having my back through everything. With all that being said after a lot of talks and prayer with God and my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal as a grad transfer with two years of eligibility.”
