Jasper Floyd Comes Up Clutch for WVU Basketball in Win Over UCF

WVU basketball senior guard Jasper Floyd scored 16 points, drilling multiple threes in big-time moments, helping the Mountaineers to a second-half comeback 74-67 win over UCF Saturday.

The Knights struck first with a three-pointer from senior guard Riley Kugel. Senior guard Jasper Floyd responded for WVU with four straight points.

Sophomore center John Bol made a layup for UCF before senior guard Honor Huff drilled WVU’s first three of the game for a 7-5 lead.

WVU found more scoring success with a 6-0 run, featuring two layups from fifth-year guard Chance Moore, making it 14-10.

UCF reclaimed the lead with a five-point swing capped off by a a three-pointer from junior forward Jordan Burks. Lorient tied it back up at 20-20 with a layup on the next possession.

The Mountaineers went up 24-22 with a layup from Moore, but UCF went on a 7-0 run in just 1:12 for a 29-24 lead. Moore added a dunk and Floyd made a jumper in the paint for a 29-28 halftime score.

WVU went just 1-12 from three in the first half, but made up for it in the paint. WVU scored 24 paint points in the first 20 minutes.

UCF started hot in the second half, forcing a WVU timeout after a 7-2 run to start. After the timeout, Burks added another three for a 39-30 lead.

Floyd hit a corner three and Moore added a layup, but UCF scored seven unanswered for a 46-35 advantage. Moore made another layup before a five-point response by UCF.

WVU found its footing for a run with four points from Lorient and then an and-one three from Huff with the made free throw. UCF made a layup, but Lorient scored five straight points and senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff made two free throws to complete a 15-2 run, cutting the score to 54-53.

Huff gave WVU its first lead of the second half with two free throws, before Floyd added his third three-pointer of the night for a 66-62 lead.

Huff drilled a three on the next possession after a stop as the Mountaineers closed out the game for a 74-67 win.

WVU will take the court again at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday when the team takes on Utah.
