On Sunday night, former WVU and Greenbrier West High School player Billy Joe Ratliff passed away at the age of 56. Ratliff battled cancer for several years.

“Greenbrier West High School mourns the loss of a legendary Cavalier, Billy Joe Ratliff, 1982 Class AA All-State Captain, 3-time All-State, 1985-86 WVU hoops, and our beloved friend,” GWHS wrote in a tweet on Monday morning.

Ratliff played at West Virginia in the 1985-86 season, appearing in 15 games for the Mountaineers, who were coached by Gale Catlett at the time. Before his time at WVU, Ratliff was a great high school player in the state, defeating all-time great teams as a 3-time all-state player in West Virginia.

After his playing career, Ratliff served as a deputy officer in Greenbrier County, starting in 2003.
