On the heels of his first multi-homer game, JJ Wetherholt has earned a big promotion. The former WVU star has been promoted from Double-A to the top level of Minor League Baseball in Triple-A.

Wetherholt will now transition from the Springfield Cardinals to the Memphis Redbirds.

Wetherholtโ€™s big game capped off a week that started with him being named to the National League roster for the MLB All-Star Futures Game. The former WVU star received the news that he was one of 25 prospects added to the National League team when rosters were announced on Monday.

The Futures Game will lead off the All-Star festivities of the week on July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta. First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm and the game will air on MLB Network, MLB.TV and MLB.com.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected Wetherholt with the seventh overall pick last season, the highest selection in WVU baseball history. He helped the Mountaineers to an NCAA Super Regional appearance during his final season, setting a series of program records at the plate after breaking out during the 2023 campaign.

Wetherholt began the 2025 season in Double-A and recorded seven home runs, 34 RBI, 44 walks and 14 stolen bases. He helped the Cardinalsโ€™ Single-A affiliate win the Florida State League championship in 2024, logging the game-winning hit.
