After the game against Texas, Pettaway decided to sit out the rest of the season and redshirt to preserve a year of eligibility. His best game this season came against Kansas when he rushed for 40 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Pettaway ran the ball 27 times this season for 72 yards and two touchdowns. In his WVU career Pettaway 1,104 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Detroit native ran 98 times for 623 yards and six touchdowns as a junior.

Pettaway made his collegiate debut as a freshman in 2016 against Iowa State. He ran the ball 30 times for 181 yards and a touchdown in the 49-19 victory.
