Mike Asti’s WVU Football Camp Takeaways: Rich Rodriguez Hesitant to Tip His Hand
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU football head coach Rich Rodriguez is never going to fully show his hand. He’s never going to tell the media everything is perfect and he expects his team to dominate.
Even if Rodriguez believes that to be the case, he’d never say it. That’s been when he’s discussed his team in the final days of fall camp.
Takeaways from the final week of fall camp:
- Rodriguez holds his quarterbacks to an extremely high standard.
“My expectation for them is really high. I like what we have in there. My expectation for them is to perform all the time,” said Rodriguez.
- Rodriguez believes his quarterback room is the deepest position on the roster.
- QB coach Rhett Rodriguez will communicate with the quarterback via helmet communication during games.
- The fall camp practices were a roller coaster ride. Rodriguez was satisfied one day and frustrated the next.
Even though Jaylen Henderson looked way better during fall camp than he did during the spring period, Nicco Marchiol remains the projected starter.
- Rodriguez seems more pleased with the defense than the offense overall.
- The new additions were added as a “necessity” and may become more than just depth pieces.
- There are some players still repeating mistakes.
- It’s likely Rodriguez has some idea of who his starters will be at this point, but he’s not going to announce anything until the last possible moment.
- Opening the season with an FCS opponent will likely lead to several position battles lingering into the first game of the regular season.
- Rodriguez appears to be simultaneously confident and uncertain about the season ahead.
